This series of exhibitions showcases some of my early interactions with subjects in rural and disadvantaged communities whilst carrying out medical outreach services.

About my work

I focus on capturing subjects within their natural environments and make use of my role as a medic to view them via a unique lens that exposes both their vulnerability and tenacity. Some of the images in this series are raw and clinical, whilst others are more painterly and picturesque.

This deliberate juxtaposition emphasises the diversity and complexity of my experiences in these settings, and engages the audience from an unexpected perspective to peak their curiosity. Captured using an iPhone, I have modified the images to retain a painterly quality more reminiscent of traditional portraiture, again playing with the juxtaposition between form and finish.

'In the Shadows' and 'Queens'

Clio Art Fair
Manhattan, New York City. May 2023

This is a two piece exhibition set.

In The Shadows
is a photographic series using telephone digital media printed on archival art paper. The subjects are men, women and children captured in their natural environment.  All of the images were taken whilst I was on voluntary medical placements servicing rural and disadvantaged communities in India, Myanmar and Papua New Guinea - See Gallery page for more.

Queens is a print series using copper and zinc etched plates with rosin aquatint overlay.  The subjects are notable women in history whose legacy continues to shape the mindset of our generation - See more here.

It is important for me to be able to capture the subjects’ vulnerability as well as to communicate the tenacity and grace with which they navigate life through unimaginable adversity. The essence of this duality is seen in all the images, regardless of where the subject resides, ultimately showcasing the constancy of the human condition.

The Clio Art Fair is a biannual event held in Manhattan, New York City. The fair invites 50 international artists without exclusive gallery representation, to showcase their creative endeavours against the vibrant New York City landscape. The event showcases a wide variety of contemporary art including: drawing, painting, photography, metal work, ceramics, sculpture and performance. The fair’s strong community collaboration and support from surrounding prestigious New York City galleries makes it one of the most renowned launchpads for emerging artists.

Touching our Land

Woollahra, Sydney, Australia. June 2014

I exhibited images from my time on the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea (PNG) as part of a group exhibition curated by fellow Sydney artist Kate Hopkinson Pointer.

I walked the Kokoda trail to understand the workings of rural and remote communities in the highland regions of PNG in order to better inform healthcare delivery models for these communities.
